Matthew 5:6-16 (KJV)

Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.

Let’s look at this verse. What is Jesus trying to tell us? We all know what it feels like to be hungry or thirsty. It is a need that has to be filled. Every day we get hungry, and we eat to satisfy that hunger. What about when we are working out in the sun? We become very thirsty, and we need to satisfy that. So, what does it mean to hunger or thirst after righteousness?

We all have a void in our lives that need to be filled. Just like we hunger and thirst after food and water, we also seek fulfillment in our lives. How often do we bury ourselves in our job? How often do we buy something we really don’t need? How often do we seek worldly pleasures to fill some need in our lives? There is only one thing that will fill that void.

So, Jesus is telling us that just like we hunger and thirst for food and water, God wants us to seek after Him. What does righteousness mean? The Bible’s standard of human righteousness is God’s perfection in every attribute, every attitude, every behavior, and every word.

Everything we do and say should mimic what God would want from us. Makes the old saying of, “What would Jesus do?”, very real.  We should ask that question before we make any decision in our lives.
